AN INTERACTIVE EDUCATIONAL ONLINE PLATFORM

Department of Pathology & Medical Biology, University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG)
THE CHALLENGE
Pathology is one of the less understood departments in the hospital. At the University Medical Center Groningen, the pathology laboratory participates in the diagnosis of hundreds of thousands of patients per year! It's invaluable, and yet what happens within it is not very well known by patients, medical students or even sometimes other hospital departments. Our goal is to shed some light into this "mysterious" laboratory and help people understand how it works and what its role is in patient diagnosis and prognosis.
THE PROJECT
To help people understand how the lab works, we are creating an online interactive platform that includes illustrations, animations and videos explaining what happens in the lab. The process at the pathology lab is divided in different stations, which allows us to explain it in small, sequential steps.
At the moment, this is a work in progress.
More information and images will be available when the project is completed.

BEHIND THE SCENES
The pathology lab is complex and fascinating. Before starting work on the illustrations for this project, we visited the laboratory at the University Medical Center Groningen to take notes, ask all of our questions and understand how a real laboratory works.
I made some sketches and after some brainstorming, we came to the decision to divide the process visually in "islands" representing the different steps, as you can see in the final image above.
